Residents who oppose the naming of public property to honor politicians still in office are breathing a collective sigh of relief this week.

Humility or humble pie? Palmetto Bay Mayor Flinn removes his name from resolution to rename public park in his honor after confronted by the public

During Monday (November 2) night’s council meeting, Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugene Flinn removed his name from consideration in a resolution intended to rename Palmetto Bay Park in his honor.

Flinn indicated he intended to turn down the resolution all along – as he did once before (re Thalatta Park on Old Cutler Road).

Was he motivated by humility — or by something else?

Last week, several residents, the Eye on Palmetto Bay (Jim Araiza), and the Miami Herald attempted to discuss the resolution with the mayor. He refused to respond, electing to issue this statement through a spokesperson, “Mayor Flinn is honored this resolution has been proposed.”

There was ample opportunity to remove the proposed resolution from the agenda prior to Monday’s meeting.  The resolution had been posted on the official village website for more than a week.

Why didn’t the mayor issue a statement formally withdrawing his name from consideration?

Perhaps he did not anticipate the volume of dissent that continued to rise as the meeting drew closer. Many residents were riled to hear a park, built with taxpayer dollars, might be renamed.

Facing a larger-than-normal audience Monday night, many who came to protest the resolution, what choice did the mayor have, but to finally withdraw his name?

We can only wonder the outcome had the residents and community-at-large remained silent.

Whatever his motivation, the mayor’s decision means Palmetto Bay Park will remain an asset of the residents and not a monument to a politician still in office.
