Studies show children who eat dinner with their families make healthier choices. Now, a nationwide initiative hopes to spread the message and bring families back to the dinner table.

Make Family Day EVERY day!

Make Family Day EVERY day!

Numerous events at schools and community centers began last week, including Southwood Middle School in Palmetto Bay, leading up to a today’s Family Day – a day to eat dinner with your children.

The South Florida Coalition Alliance is one of the many groups across the country supporting the national Family Day 2009, in order to get more families to eat together.

Claudia Bailly, a spokesperson for the Aliiance, cites a recent study by Columbia University. “The study found that families who committed to enjoying mealtimes together at least 3 to 4 times per week had a very high incidence of children who made very healthy choices when it related to substance abuse,” said Bailly.

Family meals are the perfect time to talk to your kids and to listen to what’s on their minds. The more often kids eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink, or use drugs.

Make the commitment today. Whether you’re cooking a gourmet meal, ordering food from your favorite take-out place, or eating on the go, rest assured that what your kids really want during dinnertime is YOU!
