Palmetto Bay Resident Brings Emergency Communications to Haiti

So many people are stepping forward to join the relief effort for Haiti.  Critical supplies of food, water and clothing are being addressed by churches, municipalities, and relief agencies throughout South Florida.

One service often overlooked is the need for emergency telecommunications.

Palmetto Bay resident, Gunther Karger, has stepped up in a big way to help restore an emergency communications link with the tiny island nation. Here is his report:

“Critical to the recovery of Haiti after the terrible disaster is the restoration of essential communications within the country and to the rest of the world.

In cooperation with STM Networks of Irvine, California, I have been able to secure a commitment on a humanitarian basis for an emergency communications system which provides phone and Internet via a wireless network connected to the rest of the world via a direct satellite link.

I am personally working to implement the satellite link with the Operations Director of  ‘Americas Relief Team,’ providers of emergency assistance to Latin America and the entire Caribbean region.

My sincere thanks to our local Miami CBS TV affiliate, WFOR, for their role in facilitating my contact with the Americas Relief Team.

I also wish to thank my friend of 20 years, Emil Youssefzadeh, CEO of STM Group, for making his company’s telecommunication system available for this essential humanitarian mission.
