Residents! We need you to stand up against development of land to protect our drinking water!

Residents in Palmetto Bay and neighboring Cutler Bay have an opportunity this week to protect their coastal wetlands from overdevelopment.

Three years ago, homeowners in these communities asked Miami-Dade county to block a developer from building a possible 400-home site along SW 184th St and Old Cutler Road. Residents wrote their commissioners and attended county-held meetings, and succeeded in convincing the county to stop development of this coastal wetland property.

Now, the same builder is back for another crack, and has submitted a development application at the state level.

The public must once again come together and fight to protect the nearly 130 acres of coastal wetlands.

This green space, the majority of which is located in area of the Biscayne Coastal Wetlands Project, is critical to the restoration of the Everglades. Protecting the Everglades and the wetlands is necessary to ensure the availability of affordable, clean water for South Florida’s future.

On Thursday, January 14, the Governing Board of the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) will consider the acquisition of this property from the owner/developer. Sheryl Wood, General Counsel to the SFWMD has advised the Board as to the benefits of purchasing the land and has identified the source of funding needed.

We urge all Palmetto Bay residents to come together and support the state’s acquisition of this coastal wetland property.

PLEASE email the SFWMD Governing Board and urge them to vote
YES on Discussion Agenda item #26, Resolution 2010-111.

Here are the email addresses on the Board members:

Please attend the Governing Board meeting Thursday, 9am at the
Key Biscayne Village Chambers (88 West McIntyre Street, Key Biscayne, FL)!

A large turnout will demonstrate to the Board our community’s concern for protecting our local environment and safeguarding our drinking water for years to come.
